Maria Bonn was born in Kobe, Japan, lived in a couple of snowy places, and currently resides in San Francisco, where she received her BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2006. As a self-taught production artist and designer for print and web, she spends her days working at a local graphic design firm and her nights working freelance jobs.

Maria is interested in art, science, and the self—continuously probing the relations between them for new meanings and possibilities in her work. In addition to spontaneous acts of creativity spawned by disaster, she enjoys attempting to create order out of anything that can be organized or catalogued.

Other projects include working in conjunction with Carlos Villa to produce Rehistoricizing the Time Around Abstract Expressionism in the San Francisco Bay Area, 1950s–1970s (pdf), encompassing a roundtable discussion held at the Anne Bremer Memorial Library (2005) and a forthcoming publication. For this work, Maria was the recipient of the 2006 Schmidt Community Arts Fellowship.
